Helpful Hints For Moving

By: Lou Rossen

The joy of moving is close to that of doing your taxes. The only thing worse besides death would have to be moving on April 15th! The following advice will make your move less miserable.

1. The First Step in Packing – The first packing step you should take is to get a large garbage bag or can. It is time for some discipline. As you are packing, toss your junk. Hey, you won’t have to carry it?

2. Packing Books – Books are wonderful reading, but a nightmare to move. Instead of filling boxes with them, put a couple in the bottom of all your boxes. Then create a base for the other stuff and you avoid incredibly heavy boxes.

3. When to Start Packing – Once you decide to move, when should you start packing? NOW! You have more than you think and you will also end up reminiscing about things as you dig them out of closets and such.

4. Moving Distances – The distance you move is irrelevant. The difference between 20 miles and 2 blocks means nothing. Why? You still have to pack everything, pick it up, move it, put it down and unpack it.

5. Lost Movers – If your movers do not show up at your new location, do not panic. Call the company and have them track the lost movers down. Yes, movers get lost all the time. Sometimes they just park and wait for you to call.

6. Professional Cleaners – If you are moving out of a rental, professional cleaners are worth their weight in gold. Hire them if you want to get your deposit back.

7. Renovating Your New Place – Making renovations to your new place is much like the chicken and the egg. Should you move in first or last? Definitely do the renovations first if at all possible.

8. Internet Service Hookup – Call well ahead to insure your internet hookup. Cable and DSL companies are infamous for being slow and backlogged with orders. In some areas, it can be as much as three weeks!

9. Big Furniture Planning – Before you pack up and move something big and heavy, give some thought to your new house. Specifically, where are you going to put it and how are you going to get it in there?

10. Cat Moving Transition – Cats get comfortable with their surroundings and do not like to move. At your new home, move their stuff into a room with no access to the outside. Put everything down, lock them in and wait 24 hours.

All and all, the goal with moving should be to make the minimum number of trips possible. This means being efficient. Follow these tips and you should be.
