Most Common Reasons for Getting Fired

By: Lee Alderon

Large companies will often have large offices with many employees working in cubicles. The cubicles may give the worker a feeling of being alone, but it is important to remember that you share the space with your coworkers. Here are some important tips on how to act in world of cubicles.

Noise:
Noise is the number one complaint about workers to human resources. Many people think a cubicle is made of magical sound dampening materials, and that the sounds of a radio or talking on the telephone will not be herd outside the cubicle. Let me tell you people this is not the fact. Noise spreads outside a cubicle and can be herd by everyone in the office, including the supervisors and managers. If you are allowed to listen to a radio at work try doing it wearing headphones. Disturbing your co-workers is not the way to make friends and get ahead in the business world.

Gossip:
Thousands of people lose their jobs every day across the business world for spreading gossip around the office. Talking about your co-workers will always come back to haunt you, and eventually it will get back to someone that you are talking about the other people in the office it can cause a hostile work environment, and in many cases the one spreading the gossip will be let go to help office morale, because when employees are arguing offices tend to drop in productivity, and you never know in the corporate world the co-worker you talk about today may be your department head tomorrow.

Communicating with the Real World
Bosses know that their workers are going to make and receive personal phone calls and emails when they should be working, but that does not mean it is acceptable to spend all day having conversations over email or constantly having to go outside to take phone calls. Some bosses actually expect you to do some work while they are paying you. It is also important receive large attachments at work. Receiving thinks like video clips can take up much of the offices bandwidth for the time it take to receive them. This means that the other people who may need to use the network resources may be denied because of your download and I can tell you from experience that this angers bosses.

Sit at you desk:
It is not uncommon to walk around the office to have a chat with another co-worker, very often you may have to talk to someone about some work this is perfectly acceptable, and to share pleasantries is expected but to spend 10 minutes talking about non work related subjects is a bit much. The more time you spend away from your desk on non business related things the more your boss may start to think how necessary you are to the company.

Eating in the Office:
When I worked in the land of cubicles I had to work while I ate at my desk all the time to make sure everything was done by the deadline, and so did many of my coworkers. Nothing irritated me more then when someone would bring in some hot food that was very aromatic. If it smelled good it was a distraction and if it smelled bad it was even more of a distraction.

Au Natural:
Before you put on that aftershave in the morning you may want to take a moment to think if it is really appropriate. It is not uncommon for some people to be bothered by colognes and perfumes in the office. This can cause headaches in some people and if you are the cause if this your job can quickly be in jeopardy especially if it is the boss who you are disturbing.

Make Yourself at Home:
No boss would object to anyone putting up some pictures of their family, but your cubicle is not your living room. A picture is a motivator for working hard, but making yourself feel like you are at home will lower your productivity, and makes the office look less professional to visitors and perspective clients.

Watching the way you act and being courteous to your fellow workers can make a difference between having a career with the possibility of raises and promotions or a dead end job.
